You know that exercise is good for your muscles and bones, and you may even be aware that it benefits other parts of your body too, including your cardiovascular system. But did you know that exercising regularly is good for the health of your brain? Staying active can improve your memory, protect your cognitive function, help you sleep better, and reduce anxiety and depression. How much exercise do you need? Any amount of physical activity will help, but 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week is recommended.
You don’t have to have to be an athlete to get enough exercise. You can break your 150 weekly minutes into 30-minute stretches, five days a week. Doing this reduces your risk of 20 chronic health conditions, including not only heart disease but also some cancers. Further, it dramatically reduces your risk of cognitive decline, including dementia. In fact, there is research to indicate that cognitive decline is twice as likely in inactive adults than in those who are active. How will you incorporate exercise into your daily life?
- Dance in your living room.
- Do some quick activities like squats or marching in place while you’re watching television.
- Get in your steps wherever you can, whether that means parking at the far end of the parking lot, using the stairs instead of the elevator, or getting off public transit one stop early.
- Take your dog for a walk.
- Do some light yard work or gardening.
- Take a class, schedule a personal training session, or just start working out at a local athletic club.
If you think you’re not getting enough exercise, try keeping a journal of your daily activities or a week. Look at your journal with a critical eye. Where can you fit in some more activities? How can you make the things you normally do more active? Look for ways to work more physical activity into your daily routine.
