Getting Fit
For many people, getting into shape feels insurmountable. Are you one of those people? Maybe you have gotten so out of shape that you feel like there is no way back, or maybe you think you’re too old to even try to get fit. You may have a lot of weight too lose, or physical challenges that make it hard to exercise. Fortunately, we’re here to tell you that it’s never too late to start working out and get into shape! No matter where you are in your life, you can start a fitness journey and become healthier.
Why Prioritize Fitness?
As we age, we lose muscle mass and tone, as well as flexibility and balance. Our bones become more brittle, and we become more likely to fall, which is a terrible combination. However, the research is clear on the benefits of exercise. One study analyzed people who never exercised, older adults who had exercised consistently since their teen years, and older adults who had never exercised consistently until they were over 40, 50, or even 60. The group that had exercised since youth had a 36 percent lower mortality rate, as compared to those who’d never exercised. But here’s what may surprise you: the group that started exercising later in life still had a 35 percent lower risk of dying than those who’d never exercised. Exercise helps make up for the strength and agility often lost later in life, and this research shows that it’s never too late to get started.
How to Start Working Out
Maybe you want to learn how to start working out again after a lengthy break, or maybe you’ve never done it to begin with. It doesn’t matter. The best way to get started, in either case, is with small steps. Make a plan to ease into it, planning for two to four weeks at a time. Begin with two days a week, gradually increasing the frequency and intensity of your workouts as you get stronger and more physically fit. Schedule exercise days and rest days, especially if you are doing weight training, to give your body time to recover between workouts. Set achievable goals for yourself, and celebrate your progress, focusing on what you can do instead of what you can’t.
Be Prepared to Modify Your Plan
If you’ve made up your mind to take up running, but once you start, you discover you hate running, don’t get stuck! There are many different ways to exercise, and you’re sure to find something that works for you. One great way to exercise is by joining a fitness club, where trainers can help you craft a workout plan and classes are available so that you can try different things. You might also need to shift your plan because you discover you have limitations you didn’t realize would hinder you. Fortunately, you can still exercise, even if you need to change the way you do it. Chair exercise is a good way for older people with mobility issues to stay active, and resistance bands or light weights can help build muscles if you can’t do more intense strength training.
How to Start Lifting Weights
If you are concerned about muscle loss and want to start lifting weights, we have good news for you. According to recent research, weightlifting has significant medical benefits for just about everyone, regardless of age or ability. It helps make you stronger and faster, increases your metabolism, reduces your risk of injury, and can even help prevent osteoporosis. To successfully begin weightlifting, make sure you have a good understanding of form. Enlisting the help of a personal trainer can be beneficial in making sure your form is correct and you won’t injure yourself. Let your ability guide you, so that you don’t push yourself too hard or use weights that are too light. Finally, but possibly most importantly, be consistent. Consistency is important with any exercise, and it’s crucial if you want to reap the benefits of weightlifting.
